Welcome to St. Marks Chapel Baptist Church
Founded in June of 1971 by the late Reverend Charles H. Mills, St. Marks Chapel Baptist Church was established with a clear vision: to serve both the spiritual and physical needs of the community. What began as a small congregation quickly grew into a thriving family of faith, built on the pillars of service, fellowship, and worship.
In 1972, the church moved to its current location at 1238 S. 23rd Street, where it has continued to flourish. Under Pastor Mills’ leadership, St. Marks became a beacon of hope and love. His commitment to worship was evident in the creation of both a senior and junior choir, enriching the worship experience with vibrant music. However, Pastor Mills’ impact extended far beyond the church walls. He was deeply involved in the local community, organizing food drives, community events, and outdoor ministries, all aimed at spreading the love of Christ to those in need.
Pastor Mills faithfully led the church until his passing in 1991, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering service and faith. In 1993, Reverend Otis Reynolds stepped into the role of pastor, continuing the work Pastor Mills had begun. Under Reverend Reynolds’ leadership, St. Marks continued to grow spiritually and physically until 2009, when he retired due to health reasons.
During a period of transition, several interim pastors led the congregation while the church prayed for God to provide a permanent pastor. In 2019, Reverend Darryl Scott answered that call, becoming the church’s current pastor. Pastor Scott has a strong commitment to preaching and teaching the Word of God, with a focus on equipping believers to share the Gospel and live out their faith in practical ways.
Today, St. Marks Chapel Baptist Church remains steadfast in its commitment to serve others, spread the Gospel, and build a strong sense of community and unity. Through the dedication of its leaders and members, St. Marks continues to stand as a testament to God’s grace and the power of a united church family.
We invite you to be a part of this ongoing journey of faith, service, and fellowship. There is a place for you here at St. Marks Chapel Baptist Church.
Meet Reverend Darryl Scott
A proud native of Philadelphia, Reverend Darryl Scott’s journey in faith began at a young age within the loving, Christian environment of his home. Raised with strong Christian values, he gave his life to Christ early on while attending Gospel Light Church, where he served faithfully for over 25 years. During that time, he played an active role in various ministries, including Deacon, Music, Youth, and Evangelism.
At 19, Reverend Scott responded to the call to preach, and by 1985, he was ordained as a minister. Over the years, he continued to answer God's call, moving with his family to Taylor Tabernacle in 1994, where he served as an Associate Pastor and Director of Christian Education and Evangelism Training.
In 2019, Reverend Scott accepted the opportunity to serve as Pastor at St. Mark’s Chapel Baptist Church. His heart for service and growth has always been evident, and he's committed to lifelong learning, earning certifications from New Life Bible Institute and Christian Research & Development Institute in “Pastoring with a Purpose.” He is currently working toward his Bachelor’s in Theology at Eastern Theological Seminary, building upon the foundation laid by his Associate’s Degree in the same field.
Above all, Reverend Scott is a family man. He and his wife Rochelle have been happily married for 35 years and are proud parents to three wonderful adult children—Shanita, Cameron, and Courtney. His warmth, humor, and engaging storytelling bring the Word of God to life in a way that is relatable and impactful. Known for his quick wit and kind, encouraging spirit, Reverend Scott is always ready to share a word of hope rooted in biblical truth and a deep love for others.
With a heart for evangelism and discipleship, Reverend Scott is passionate about spreading the gospel and equipping others to grow in their faith. His mission is simple: to win souls for Christ and glorify God’s kingdom in everything he does.
“For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”
— Ephesians 4:12
